The Anglican Church of Madagascar is in the Province of the Indian Ocean. The first Anglican missionary arrived in Madagascar in 1864. In 1874 the diocese of Madagascar was founded. There are now six Anglican dioceses in Madagascar. The Anglican Diocese of Toliara was established in 2013. Their training and teaching programmes are managed through St Patrick’s Theological College under the supervision of the Anglican Church of the Indian Ocean.
The Centre for Global Mission has partnered with the Anglican Church of Madagascar for several years now, working on the Malagasy Translation Project (translating the Moore College PTC material). For several years, through partnership with the Sydney Anglican Diocese, clergy in Madagascar have benefitted from training using the French translation of the PTC notes.
Through our partnership with the Diocese of Toliara, St Patrick’s Bible College has access to our theological resources and online tools. They are currently using the Moore College PTC material in English, French and Malagasy. There are ongoing translations of the PTC material into French and Malagasy. CGM is looking for funds to continue the Malagasy translation work. Having the training material in their native language will help to expand their ongoing training of clergy.
Training programmes in the Diocese of Toliara include:
– training students from dioceses across Madagascar at St Patrick’s Bible College
– students from dioceses across Madagascar studying courses online through St Patrick’s Bible College
– training rural evangelists and catechists within the Diocese of Toliara
– staff of the Diocese of Toliara teaching evangelists and Catechists of other Anglican dioceses in Madagascar.
